In the wonderful world of skincare there’s many words we learn on a daily basis. We’ve hear terms like collagen, elasticity, skin aging, antioxidants, etc. With time we start learning about how these affect our skin, but there’s one category that caught my attention from the very first time I heard it: actives. If you’ve been into beauty for some time now then you’ve definitely came across this word, am I right? Hundreds and hundreds of articles and YouTube videos out there wanna help you add them to your routine, learn the right ones for you, and compare X from Y, but the main question remains: “What are actives?”

In a nutshell, actives are the specific ingredients you’ll find on a skincare formula that will work towards fighting a skin concern/struggle, aka, *the* ingredient that will help with signs of aging, rosacea, acne, scars, pigmentation, dehydration, dermatitis, etc.depending on the product you’re using. So basically, when you read the words “Active Ingredient” on a label, that’s the actual chemical or molecule in the product that’s doing what the product says it’s gonna do.

At this point you may think: “But all skincare products contain ingredients to help your skin, so, is there active ingredients in everything?” The answer is no, not all products feature actives, and the first step into learning which do and which don’t is getting used to read labels.

For the past few weeks I’ve been testing out two serums that caught my attention at first because of the powerful active ingredients they featured. As a person with acne prone, sensitive, rosacea prone skin, I rely on chemical exfoliants and brightening products to keep my skin healthy and even, and Some By Mi came out with two serums involving all those, aka, my skin-dreams come true. While both worked wonders on my skin, they’re definitely meant for different goals, so here’s a little side to side on things I think you should keep in mind when trying to decide which one could work better for your skin.

Some By Mi AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum

If you’re into AHA’s, BHA’s and PHA’s you’ve probably already heard about Some By Mi’s uber popular 30 Days Miracle toner. One of Korea’s most hyped up products for the past few years because of its incredible powers and the capacity to transform people’s skin in matter of 30 days. Well, after the success of the toner the brand came out with a whole line of products based on the same formula, and I got to try the serum. Let me tell you: it lives up to the hype and goes beyond it. This serum is designed to treat and soothe sensitive and acne-prone skin types with two powerful ingredientes: Tea Tree Leaf and Centella Asiatica. Also featuring active ingredients such as AHAs, BHAs and PHAs, this serum exfoliates the skin while a double layer of plant-based oils helps lock moisture in.

The best thing about it is how easily and fast it absorbs. While it’s not super lightweight, it has the perfect consistency to layer products on top of it while feeling rich and nourishing. During this time testing it out, I’ve noticed some red spots on my nose have vanished and my skin’s texture feels and looks better, specially when talking forehead and chin.

Some By Mi Galactomyces Pure Vitamin C Glow Serum

Oh, Vitamin C. What would I do without you? Since the very first time I introduced Vitamin C to my routine I never went back. It just changed my skin so much it’s now a staple on my routine. But not all formulas work for me: sometimes it’s the smell I can’t take, sometimes is how sticky they are or how my skin feels after using them. Well, with this serum I feel like I got only the benefits and non of the bad side effects. Formulated to help restore your skin’s natural radiance and energy, this serum uses 3% pure ascorbic acid - aka Vitamin C - and 75% galactomyces ferment filtrate, which together not only help brightening up the skin but also moisturize, smooth, soothe and boost elasticity.

Yep, I know, sounds too good to be true but it is in fact true. I personally prefer to use it during night time, as during daytime I rather keep my routine simple, and this serum works even better when layered with other products such as night masks or essences.

Do any of these sound like they belong on your routine?
