Ingredient Focus 7. Caprylic/Capric triglycerides

Comment /

Mineral oil is a representative victim of “organic & natural band wagon.” It has been appeared in “must avoid” list for past few years, mainly by the “organic” and “natural-friendly” cosmetic brands. Most of the time, they charged ridiculous amount of money by simply substituting mineral oil into other essential oils. Well, it is totally understandable of this irrational fear on mineral oil because mineral oil is a purified version of petrolatum. Who would want to use petrolatum derived oil for her precious skin?

But mineral oil is a relatively safe, especially when the purity is high enough. So it is used in many therapeutic ointments such as Vaseline or in baby products as in Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Oil. However, despite of its moisturizing and anti-evaporating property, its comedogenic property is still in dispute. Even though recent researches suggest that highly purified mineral oil is not comedogenic, but products with mineral oil do feel quite rich and oily and we naturally avoid these products. You may wonder as “why on the earth this guy is talking about mineral oil in this posting?” Because caprylic/capric triglyceride is an almost perfect substitute for mineral oil. What’s the point to add oils in your cosmetics? The answer is simple. It does make your precious hydrophilic serums stay on your skin longer, rather than evaporate away like a wind. So it moisturizes your skin much longer than water-based products.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is naturally driven fatty acid. Caprylic aicd and capric acid are octanoic acids (with 10 carbon chain) and linked to glycerol through ester bond. Caprylic acid and capric acid is are a minor derivatives extracted from coconut oil. So to make this long story simple, it is a mixture of glycerin & some coconut oil. The amazing part of this oil is that it does not feel oily and thick due to its relatively short carbon chain. So, it feels light on your skin while it keeps the moisture on your skin as good as mineral oil. It does not contain any double bonds in the fatty acid chain; it is resistant to the oxidization. It is a good emollient and excellent solvent without much thickening finish on your face.

Another advantage of caprylic/capric triglyceride is non-toxicity and good skin absorbance. The only problem is because of its processing and handling, it is an expensive ingredient compared to other emollients and solvents.
